PROJECTS / MARINA ONE SINGAPORE
Singapore's Green Heart
Marina One in Singapore represents the largest project undertaken by Christoph Ingenhoven to date. Officially inaugurated on January 15, 2018, Marina One serves as an international exemplar for integrated living and working spaces. It contributes innovatively to the dialogue on mega-cities, particularly in tropical regions that face significant challenges due to growing populations and climate change.
The high-density complex spans over 400,000 square meters and features a mix of uses within its four high-rise buildings. These structures surround the Green Heart, a multi-level public space that showcases a three-dimensional green oasis reflecting the diversity of tropical flora.
Today, over 50 percent of the world's population resides in cities, and this figure is projected to rise to 70 percent within the next three decades. By 2050, the global population is expected to reach nine to ten billion. Accommodating this growth in urban areas will necessitate high-rise buildings.
The organic design of the building complex, featuring iconic louvres and extensive greenery, enhances the microclimate and boosts biodiversity. Drawing inspiration from Asian paddy field terraces, the green center formed by the four towers—with its multi-story, three-dimensional gardens—showcases the diversity of tropical flora and establishes a new habitat. This Green Heart includes over 350 different species of trees and plants, including 700 trees, spread across a 37,000 square meter landscaped area. Various animal species also contribute to this biological diversity. The landscape architecture, inspired by the natural climate variations at different vertical levels of a rainforest, emulates a green valley with climate changes by level. Restaurants and cafés, retail areas, a fitness club, pool, supermarket, food court, and event spaces on the various open terraces offer not only products and services to residents, office workers, and visitors but also create venues for social interaction.
The Green Heart, the central concept of Marina One, was designed by Christoph Ingenhoven in collaboration with landscape architects Gustafson Porter + Bowman. The interplay between the building geometry and the garden promotes natural ventilation and creates a pleasant microclimate. As the largest public landscaped area in Singapore's Marina Bay Central Business District, it offers a nature-integrated living space with a usable area 125 percent larger than the original site surface.
Marina One consists of four high-rise buildings dedicated to office, residential, and retail functions, achieving Green Mark Platinum and LEED Platinum ratings. The two office towers each provide 175,000 square meters of usable floor space, while the two residential towers house 1,042 city apartments and penthouses, accommodating approximately 3,000 residents.
The compact and efficient layout design is enhanced by energy-saving ventilation systems, highly effective external solar screening devices, and glazing that minimizes solar radiation entering the building. Direct connections to four of Singapore’s six mass rapid transit lines, along with bus stops, bicycle parking facilities, and electric vehicle charging stations, significantly reduce emissions from private transportation. The interior and building facade feature a calm, earthy bronze color scheme to promote a harmonious atmosphere.
